Public Education is a cornerstone activity (another is a Vessel Safety Check) of the Auxiliary to promote safe boating practices. Members of Flotilla 10-1 conduct boating safety classes in the fall and spring. "ABOUT BOATING SAFELY" About Boating Safely logo
This course is NASBLA-approved1. We may conduct the class in one 8-hour full session or in 5 2-hour sessions. A 50-question test follows the class. A certificate and wallet card are awarded for a passing grade. (learn more)

MASSACHUSETTS students between the ages of 12 and 15, must complete an additional 10-question test immediately upon completion of the About Boating Safely class. All test material is discussed in the class. The completed test is signed by the Flotilla Commander and then must be submitted to the Massachusetts Environmental Police by the student's parents.

BOATING SKILLS AND SEAMANSHIP Boating Skills and Seamanship logo
This course is designed for the novice or experienced boater. It is conducted in 8 2-hour sessions. Topics include: which boat is right for you, boating equipment, trailering and handling your boat, "highway" signs on the water, rules you must follow when on water, powering your boat, lines and knots, radios, and navigation. A test follows the last session and a certificate is awarded for a passing grade. (learn more)

1 NASBLA is "a national nonprofit organization that works to develop public policy for recreational boating safety." A NASBLA-approved class is the MINIMUM requirement for the New England states, except MA, to operate a recreational boat. learn more
